House of Lords: Select Committee Evidence
On 25 May, our Co-Chair, Jane Golding, gave oral evidence to the House of Lords European Affairs Select Committee on the rights of UK citizens in the EU. This formed part of the committee’s inquiry on Citizens’ Rights with two panels, one on UK citizens in the EU and the other on EU citizens in the UK. She spoke alongside Michaela Benson (Reader in Sociology at Goldsmiths, University of London) and Sue Wilson (Chair at Bremain in Spain).
Jane gave evidence on general implementation issues, including reporting on delays in some countries and problems as a result in e.g. access to work/services. She also highlighted communications issues in a number of countries, especially in relation to vulnerable and highly integrated groups. She underlined that the Withdrawal Agreement does not cover EU-wide onward movement nor interlinked rights such as recognition of qualifications and that the TCA’s provisions provide no remedy for this as they are inadequate on mobility and professional qualifications. The transcript of the oral evidence is here.
BiE then submitted follow-up written evidence on all of these points with further details, as well as a series of country reports from BiE country groups across the EU, which can be found here.
