Celebrating a Major Milestone: Project ICE

Celebrating a Major Milestone: Project ICE

We are thrilled to announce that British in Europe, the dedicated non-profit organisation committed to the advocacy and support of UK citizens across the European Union, EEA and Switzerland, has been awarded a significant grant by the EU Commission. This grant marks the commencement of an ambitious 20-month project titled 'Inform, Connect, Empower: Capacity Building for Charter Agents of Change (ICE)' as of March 1, 2024.

Our mission through ICE is clear: to investigate the implementation of the EU Charter on Fundamental Rights through how the EU/UK Withdrawal Agreement is applied to over 1.2 million UK citizens living in the EU. This project is not just about research; it's about action. We aim to shine a light on the relationship between the Withdrawal Agreement (WA) and the Charter, ensuring that the rights of UK-WA citizens are not only recognised but also properly implemented.

Building strength through knowledge, ICE will empower 11 country groups working with British in Europe through training volunteers not only in the technical aspects of the Charter and the WA but also in advocacy, communication, and media skills. Our approach is one of partnership, connecting with civil society organisations, trade unions, legal clinics, and governmental bodies to help weave a safety net of support and advice for our community.

ICE is not just a project; it is a promise—a promise of commitment, inclusivity, and regular communication. We will keep our community informed and engaged with frequent updates, including our progress through three pivotal face-to-face training sessions for our volunteers, as well as ongoing mentoring and online advocacy training, and culminating in the delivery of a comprehensive toolbox of support. A key element of the project will be case-working complex cases in real time, and for this we rely on you in the community to raise your cases with us.

This grant is only part of the story, alongside it we need to raise funds to build our organisation and this is how you can help. Please donate to help us purchase essential tools as well as fund activities, such as representing you at the Specialised Committee and voting rights, outside of this grant so our journey doesn’t end in 20 months.

With your help, we will inform, connect, and empower UK citizens covered by the WA living in the EU, ensuring that their rights are upheld, and their voices heard.
