Letters to UK Party Leaders

When the election was declared, British in Europe wrote to each party leader explaining how they can support British citizens living in the EU.  We had no responses but were pleased to see Votes For Life reaching the Lib Dem manifesto.

House of Lords Select Committee evidence

Jeremy Morgan QC, vice-chair of British in Europe was invited to present evidence to the House of Lords EU Justice Committee on 22 October 2019. Given the scope of the committee, the evidence he provided was focused on the areas that are in the gift of the UK:

  1. Continued uprating of UK state pensions.
  2. Continued provision of EU reciprocal healthcare.
  3. Retention of existing right of UK citizens returning to the UK to bring their families with them.
  4. Retention of rights re student fees and finance for UK citizens resident in the EU.
  5. Government policy and messaging about EUinUK.
  6. Communication campaigns.

BiE and t3m Presentation to AFCO

Jane Golding, co-chair of British in Europe, and Dimitri Scarlato from the3million were invited to present to AFCO, the influential Constitutional Affairs committed chaired by Antonio Tajani.

This is the second visit to the committee, the last one was in November 2017.

Both speakers challenged MEPs to stand up for our rights having promised much over the past 2 years. Given the threat of an imminent no-deal Brexit, they stressed that the time to safeguard rights is now and that if an extension is agreed, ring fencing our rights needs to be a priority.

MEPs, including Guy Verhofstadt, listened to the speeches and responded with their own testimonies and pledges.

BiE statement to PETI committee in Brussels

British in Europe, along with our colleagues the3million, were invited to return to the Petitions committee at the European Parliament (PETI) to follow up a submission made in February 2018. Unfortunately, due to work commitments, we were unable to attend in person but instead asked MEP Jude Kirton-Darling to read out a statement on our behalf.

Thank you Jude Kirton-Darling MEP for representing us and to the many other MEPs who spoke on our behalf as they consistently have done for the past 3 years.

On Wednesday 3 July 2019, five representatives from British in Europe gave evidence to the House of Commons Select Committee on Exiting the EU headed by Hilary Benn MP.  This was supported by comprehensive written evidence.
